Performing Visual Surveys of Non-planar Benthic Terrain
نویسندگان
چکیده
A key issue facing any ROV or AUV-based benthic visual survey is how to point the camera normal to the terrain during the survey. Though planar terrain surveys can be executed using a constant camera orientation, non-planar terrain surveys require that the commanded camera orientation change during vehicle movement.. This paper proposes a method that generates a smooth camera orientation command by first spatially filtering local terrain orientation measurements through the construction of a spline-based model of the terrain. The method then calculates an orientation command from the spline model using the spline point projection algorithm. A real-time version of this algorithm has been fielded on a Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute ROV, allowing the ROV to maintain camera perpendicularity autonomously over non-planar benthic sites and enabling small-scale visual surveys of these sites.

Navigation for Performing Visual Surveys of Non-Planar Surfaces
This paper addresses the problem of navigating a robotic vehicle over non-planar surfaces for the purpose of performing visual surveys. The key issue lies in generating a spatiallysmooth camera orientation command that will point the camera toward the surface during surface traversal. The proposed solution filters high spatial frequency local surface measurements using a low spatial frequency s...
متن کاملMulti-Scale Measures of Rugosity, Slope and Aspect from Benthic Stereo Image Reconstructions
This paper demonstrates how multi-scale measures of rugosity, slope and aspect can be derived from fine-scale bathymetric reconstructions created from geo-referenced stereo imagery. We generate three-dimensional reconstructions over large spatial scales using data collected by Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), manned submersibles and diver-held imaging sy...
متن کاملMultiscale Terrain Analysis of Multibeam Bathymetry Data for Habitat Mapping on the Continental Slope
Multibeam surveys can provide detailed bathymetry data for the continental slope from which quantitative descriptors of the seabed terrain (e.g., slope) may be obtained. We illustrate the value of these descriptors for benthic habitat mapping, and highlight the advantages of multiscale analysis. We examine the application of these descriptors as predictor variables for species distribution mode...
متن کاملPractical aspects of terrain correction in airborne gravity gradiometry
We study the practical aspects of performing terrain corrections in airborne/seaborne gravity gradient surveys in terms of necessary spatial extents and required resolution of digital elevation models. We develop a new and practical method for performing terrain corrections through an extension of Parker’s 1972 method for calculating potential anomalies in the Fourier domain. We then study and ...
متن کاملApplication of visual surveys to estimate acorn production of Brant`s oak (Quercus brantii Lindl.) in northern Zagros Forests of Iran
Acorn production plays a fundamental role in the organization and dynamics of oak forest ecosystems. Regarding acorn importance, visual survey methods have been used to estimate acorn production of oak species throughout the world. In this study, the mast indices of Brant`s oak (Quercus brantii Lindl.) were determined in a section of northern Zagros forests, almost 36 ha area, near Baneh, Kurdi...
